Inkreate

Transfer the real 3D world to interactive creative endeavours in the apparel industry

Project Summary

Bringing the real 3D world into interactive creative endeavours in the apparel industry

Although the manufacture and distribution of clothing have evolved significantly in recent years with the application of new technologies, the design process remains largely traditional. Sketching ideas, creating storyboards and producing technical drawings are just some of the tasks that are carried out in much the same way as in the past, or using digital tools that, for the most part, result from the application of technologies developed for other industries and, are therefore not tailored to the needs of the clothing and fashion industry.

On the other hand, there are emerging technologies that could reduce the time and cost of the design process, such as 3D scanners and 3D sketching tools.

The InKreate project aims to address some of the constraints that limit the implementation of 3D scanners and 3D sketching tools, helping European SMEs involved in fashion design to reduce the time and cost of the design process.

Objectives

  • To make use of available low-cost body scanner technology
  • To create libraries of sample avatars representing a target population
  • To reduce the development time for a new clothing collection through a new 3D design tool

Technical Objectives

  • To develop algorithms that eliminate errors in low-cost scanning devices
  • Adapt the 3D scanners to the formats required by the design tool
  • Define poses and adapt the avatars to those poses
  • Develop algorithms to create libraries of avatars tailored to specific clothing collections
  • To develop algorithms to transform sketches into technical drawings
